There’s a chill in the air and people are digging out their long pants and jackets. It can only mean that Fall is here! Some relish the news, while some hiss at the impending cooling temperatures. We want to talk about the seasons and our favorite things about each one (we’d love to hear from you too, leave a comment!).

This week’s seasonal selections come from our owner and leader, Jen Barry.

What is your favorite season and why?

For as long as I can remember, autumn has always been my favorite season. I love the sights, the smells…the Halloween candy and the Thanksgiving turkey. As I got older, fall meant football games and pep rallies and marching bands and bonfires. Older still, autumn was the time I enjoyed the most inspiration for my novels. I loved to curl up with coffee or tea and a blanket on the back deck and write until my fingers were too cold to move. This fall means 2020 is nearly over, and I think we’re all looking forward to a fresh start in 2021.

What is your idea of summer fun?

Usually, my idea of summer fun is anywhere with air conditioning. Maybe my house, or maybe a condo on the beach with air conditioning. If I do get outside, I hope water is around for either a refreshing dip or a cool breeze.

What is your favorite fall activity?

When I was younger, fall meant pep rallies and football games. I still get nostalgic for a good football game, especially when I hear a marching band warming up or playing a pep song.

Our Irish sports club, the Nashville Gaelic Athletic Club, also usually starts an intra-club league during the fall, so those games have sort of taken over for American football. Nothing is more fun than huddling on the sidelines in a hoodie with a thermos of coffee and cheering for whichever team my husband plays for.

What is your favorite winter activity?

I always daydream about a horse-drawn sleigh ride in the winter while wrapped in a furry blanket and drinking hot chocolate. Since that has remained a daydream, I’ll say that sitting in front of a warm fire, preferably before Christmas so I can enjoy the twinklight lights and holiday movies, with a mug of hot chocolate will just have to take first place.

What is your favorite spring activity?

Again, Irish sports pick up in spring after a cold, cold winter. The spring starts a new league season, and then leads into late spring tournaments, which often continue through the summer.

What is your favorite holiday and why?

I want to say Thanksgiving, but really it’s Christmas…which starts at Thanksgiving, really. So, both. Why not? Let’s just throw Halloween in there, too, which kicks off the whole winter holiday season and get a three-fer.

As for why? I love the parties, dinners, family gatherings, friend gatherings… It’s all so warm and social and full of love. And it’s great that it all happens during a three-month span so my introvert heart can recover throughout the rest of the year.
